LINNAMILLA

This rural site is situated in a mature landscape on the banks of the River Sullane at Linnamilla Bridge, west of Macroom. The site plan form is reminiscent of a vernacular cluster of dwelling houses and outbuildings. The house is divided into two blocks – a single-storey living block with a red corrugated roof and a two-storey sleeping block. The geometric floor plan was formed to maximise solar gain, natural light, and views across the landscape. The angled link between the two blocks widens to the rear to allow a panoramic view of the landscape. The choice of materials and detailing was influenced by the vernacular architecture – clipped barge details to negate fascia’s and soffits, using a corrugated metal roof and natural slates. Anthracite zinc was used on the dormer and lobby roof with a cedar cladding to the canopy beneath on approach to the main entrance.
